Summer 2024 — “Soli Deo Gloria”
The heart of Cedarville's music and worship department is in this phrase: To God Alone Be the Glory. Soli Deo Gloria. This mission touches every part of music at Cedarville, from our music and worship programs to our ensembles and touring bands to our graduates' careers in every corner of the music industry. We cultivate musicians and worshipers who love the Lord — and love to help others praise Him too!
While the world sees music as entertainment or a means for self-glorification, Cedarville stands firm on helping our students cultivate a skillful, truthful artistry that encourages worship of — and glory to — God alone.
Soli Deo Gloria
Soli Deo Gloria is a Latin phrase meaning “Glory to God alone.” Rooted in the Reformation, it flows from a dependence upon Scripture alone as our foundation for comprehending our salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, for God’s glory alone.
Mysterious Ways: Inside Cedarville's Department of Music and Worship
Home. A powerful word. When people find out I was born and raised in Texas, the first question they often ask is, “How did you get to Cedarville?” My answer is always the same: “The breath of God blew me here!”
Echoes of Excellence
Like students in other artistic disciplines, music majors are often asked the question, “What do you want to do with your degree?" At Cedarville, the Department of Music and Worship answers: “What can't you do?"
A Heart of Worship: An Interview With Jim Cato
For 40 years, Jim Cato ’83, Associate Vice President of Christian Ministries, has dedicated his life to music and ministry at Cedarville University. As he approached retirement this spring, Cato sat down with Cedarville Magazine to look back on his tenure.
Equipping the Church to Worship
Robert Rhodes ’16, worship pastor of Dayton Avenue Baptist Church in Xenia, Ohio, saved a video from his senior year of college and still watches it over eight years later. As he talked about it, the chills running through his body were almost palpable. “It gets me excited about what the Lord’s going to do when He calls us all home,” he said.
